Destruction as a prerequisite to creation

I’m writing this issue of Awakening the Spirit from the open air dining room of Finca Luna Nueva Lodge – a beautiful organic farm in Costa Rica. It’s dusk. The birds are saying goodnight to each other and, I hope, to me too.

One of the things that’s so important about this place is the way everything on the farm is used to support everything else on the farm. Nothing goes to waste. When the gray water system deposits used matter in the catch tank, that matter then gets reused to feed something else on the land. When the pigs poop, their poop is collected and goes into the compost bin to feed the plants we eat for dinner tonight. Nothing goes to waste. It’s all a big circle of destruction and creation; of waste and re-growth.

Now take a moment and remember the Phoenix – the mythical bird, that is, not the city. “The fable tells that he dwells in Arabia, and that every hundred years, he burns himself to death in his nest; but each time a new Phoenix, the only one in the world, rises up from the red egg. “ Quoted from The Phoenix Bird by Hans Christian Andersen.

When that bird burns, it must seem as if that will be the end of it. Anyone watching from a distance would think that. But such is not the case. The phoenix then rises out of those flames of destruction and lives again in its fullest beauty. It seems that it must die in its current existence in order to be reborn in the next one.

And, then, there is the goddess Kali. “Kali’s four arms represent the complete circle of creation and destruction, which is contained within her. She represents the inherent creative and destructive rhythms of the cosmos.” Quoted from http://www.exoticindiaart.com/kali.htm.

Her right hands represent her creative aspect, while her left hands represent her destructive aspect. Contained within her image is the symbolism of the destruction of ignorance and the dawning of knowledge. Her sword is the sword of knowledge that cuts the knots of ignorance and destroys false consciousness. Kali opens the gates of freedom with this sword, having cut the eight bonds that bind human beings.

Then there is the myth of Inanna and that of Persephone. In both cases, our heroines go to the depths and from there are reborn. Our myths are telling us that the old world must be destroyed before the new world can arise from its ashes.

It looks to me as if we are now right in the middle of the cycle of destruction. And for a lot of people this is a very scary place to be. We get so attached to the way things are - even if they are not so good - that it’s hard to see that we might be better off if we could just let go. But letting go of the way things are in favor of an unknown future is not the easiest thing to do for most people.

The fear so many people experience at times like now comes from their focus on the aspect of destruction. To be aware that your world is falling apart and to feel that you can’t do anything about it naturally brings up fear.

If you listen to the news media, you find yourself bombarded with things which will make you afraid - terrorism, war, global warming, the disappearance of species.

If you look around, you will see your freedoms being eroded one at a time, quietly and under the guise of patriotism. You stand in a line at an airport and feel helpless as someone paws through your luggage in this land of the free and home of the brave. And anger rises right along with that fear. (To my foreign subscribers, please forgive my American references.)

But there is the other side of the process - creation. It’s sometimes hard to see that part because all the media focus is on fear and destruction. However, if you look carefully and pay attention, you will see that other side. This newsletter is one of its manifestations as is our website and many others like it. Another example is YES! Magazine and The Positive Futures Network. And then there are the folks at New Chapter Supplements, Co-op America and Credo Mobile fka Working Assets who are fine examples of the new wave of companies whose approach to business and life in general is one of creation - not destruction.

The key to not giving up and becoming discouraged is to remain open to the creative process. What can YOU do that will put you directly in line with the flow of creative energy? Who can you help? What kind of discussion group can you start or become a part of? What books and magazines can you read? Can you start a community supported agriculture garden? Can you buy only locally grown food? Can you green your home in any way?

The key to surviving this change with your heart and mind intact lies in knowing that “this too will pass”. When people around you get into fear-based conversations, walk away. When the news starts to overwhelm you, find some alternative news. For example, you could check out Indymedia or The Spirit of Ma’at .

Another thing to remember is that as we move through this period, the spiritual body of the planet is going through a change also. And as the planet changes, we MUST change with her. That is why there is so much information about the various healing modalities available on The Many Faces of God. Part of our work at this time is to heal ourselves on all levels of our being - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Well, I hope this will take you through the next month. It would be great to know if this newsletter has been of benefit to you. Let us know by going to https://www.aquantumpath.com/contact-us.html.

Until next month – be the peace you want to see in the world.
